June 2021 Pino Family Reunion
The most recent reunion of family and friends at the ranch took place the weekend of June 25-27, 2021.
Date: tbd Mudding
The Jacal House was built using using mud, grass and sticks for walls. This is overlain with a layer of mud/adobe (the “daub”) to seal secure the home. Join us for the next Pino family preservation project, mudding the Jacal house. Together, we’ll roll up our sleeves to mix and apply the mud/adobe overlain to our beloved homestead.
August 27-29, 2021 Music Jamboree
A multi-generational, multi-genre jam session where fellow musicians came together for a weekend of music making. The weekend was described as magical as musicians played on the porch of the adobe house and inside and outside the jacal house. We hope to make this a regular event.
Please join us for the next Music Jam – April 2022.
November 6, 2021 Cousins Reunion

CARRIZOZO
Carrizozo is the county seat of historic Lincoln County, located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 54 and 380. It is named after the Carrizo grasses that are abundant in the area. Carrizozo means “lots of Carrizo.” The population is 1,000, the elevation is 5,425, and the average rainfall is 12-14 inches. There is an average of 286 days a year of sunshine. Carrizozo’s cost of living is 24.50% lower than the U.S. average.

CARRIZOZO SITES
Carrizozo Heritage Museum, the focus of this fledgling museum is the community’s past as a railroad boom-town. One exhibit features a typical one-room school with a window overlooking a since-demolished county seat building. A new model railroad exhibit is a kid-pleaser. 103 12th St., Carrizozo (intersection U.S. 54 and 380)
Limited hours.
Valley of Fires Recreation Area, located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin, filling the basin with molten rock. The resulting lava flow is four to six miles wide, 160 feet thick and covers 125 square miles. The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States.
From a distance, Valley of Fires appears as barren rock but when you walk through the nature trail there are many varieties of flowers, cactus, trees and bushes typical of the Chihuahuan desert. Animals include bats, roadrunners, quail, cottontails, mule deer, barberry sheep, and lizards. It’s also a virtual birdwatcher’s paradise with great horned owls, burrowing owls, buzzards, hawks, gnat catchers, cactus wrens, sparrows and golden eagles.
CARRIZOZO RESTAURANTS
The desert environment can be an unforgiving place. The Pino Family Ranch Handbook has been written to help uninitiated visitors learn about the region and the natural elements unique to the Southwest. Please take a look at it before your visit to ensure a successful desert adventure. Pino Family Ranch Handbook
